Meet My Ancestors

In a 7,000-year-old town in Bulgaria, over 100 graves have been uncovered, revealing skeletons with stakes through their hearts and mutilated bones. Meet the vampires that almost were.
Vampires may be greeted with swoons today, but in medieval Eastern Europe they were dealt a metal spike through the chest. Read more of this post

Is Starbucks anti-semitic?

The global coffee company STARBUCKS released a statement this week to clarify apparent misconceptions about the company’s patronage of Israel, Huffington Post reports.

Worldwide Terror Alert

American embassies across the Middle East will be closed Sunday due to a new terror alert issued by the State Department, which states that “al-Qa’ida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond, and that they may focus efforts to conduct attacks in the period between now and the end of August.”
Among the embassies that will be closed due to the threat are those in Egypt, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, and Israel. State Department spokesperson Marie Harf told the London Telegraph “It is possible we may have additional days of closing as well.”
On 11 September, 2012, the U.S. consulate in Benghazi was attacked, and four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens, were killed. The alert will remain in place until 31 August.

Child Abuse at Waco

For the sake of the children,” has emerged as one of the most dangerous phrases in American politics. President Clinton has invoked children’s alleged dependence on the federal government not just for his putatively child-oriented programs (such as the misnamed Department of Education), but also for issues that have only a tenuous connection to children, such as his prohibition on semiautomatic firearms, or his terrorism proposals for greater wiretapping and for trials with secret evidence. The most ironic, however, of all the administration’s claims about its love for children is its persistent assertion that the BATF and FBI attacks on the home of the Branch Davidian children in Waco, Texas, were a noble effort to protect the children from child abuse.
And, it turns out, there really was a massive amount of child abuse at Waco, although not exactly as described by the government. Read more of this post

Border effort let guns into criminal hands

U.S. probe aimed at tracing arms to drug cartels lost track of hundreds, including two linked to agent’s death.

A federal operation that allowed weapons from the U.S. to pass into the hands of suspected gun smugglers so they could be traced to the higher echelons of Mexican drug cartels has lost track of hundreds of firearms, many of which have been linked to crimes, including the fatal shooting of a Border Patrol agent in December.
The investigation, known as Operation Fast and Furious, was conducted even though U.S. authorities suspected that some of the weapons might be used in crimes, according to a variety of federal agents who voiced anguished objections to the operation. Read more of this post

Howdy, folks!

[Editors’ note has been moved.]

The eyes of Texas are upon you, all the live-long day.
The eyes of Texas are upon you, you cannot get away.
Do not think you can escape them, at night or early in the morn.
The eyes of Texas are upon you, till Gabriel blows his horn.

Sing me a song of Prexy, of days long since gone by.
Again I seem to greet him and hear his kind reply.
Smiles of gracious welcome before my memory rise,
Again I hear him say to me “Remember Texas‘ Eyes”.
